Burnham-On-Sea residents launch new community speedwatch group

Community speedwatch group A new community speedwatch group is to be set up along a Burnham-On-Sea road in a fresh bid to make it safer.

Marine Drive residents have the support of Somerset County Council for the initiative, which comes after a petition was launched in the town last month demanding that new safety measures are introduced along the busy road.

Town and district councillor Cllr Joe Leach launched the campaign amid growing concern about the fast speed of traffic.

This week, he told Burnham-On-Sea.com he was "delighted" that Somerset County Council had given the Community Speed Watch proposal the go-ahead.

"County Hall have told us that there is an increased chance of getting a pedestrian crossing should we prove that speeding is an issue along the road," he said.

"This is therefore definitely a step in the right direction to getting a permanent solution to the problem introduced."

The scheme will allow campaigners to monitor the speed of traffic along Marine Drive and pass it on to the County Council.
