Burnham-On-Sea
schools achieve 'National Healthy Schools Status'

Children
at St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Burnham-On-Sea
have good reason to celebrate this week after
their school set a glowing example of healthy living by achieving
National Healthy Schools Status (NHSS).
The
schools which have achieved NHSS in the Burnham area include Burnham
Infants School, East Brent Church of England First School, King
Alfred School, Mark Church of England VC First School and St Joseph's
Catholic Primary School and Nursery.
NHSS
is a national programme that promotes the link between health,
behaviour and achievement. The Government has set a target for
every school to participate in the NHSS programme by 2009.
Somerset
is well on the way to reaching the target, with almost all schools
already participating in the programme and 56 schools having already
achieved the status.
Supported
by Somerset County Council and Somerset Primary Care Trust, all
members of the schools communities have been active in working
to improve health and well-being at each of the schools.
Dr
Kath Wilson, Somerset County Councils Healthy Schools Coordinator,
said: "The Healthy Schools Team in Somerset wants all children
and young people to be healthy and achieve, at school and in life.
We believe that providing opportunities at school for enhancing
emotional and physical health will improve long-term health and
raise achievement for all. I would like to thank all our colleagues
for doing such sterling work in supporting and promoting the aims
and ethos of National Healthy School Status."
Cllr
Pauline Clarke, Somerset County Councils Portfolio Holder
for Strategic Childrens Services, added: "These schools
are to be congratulated as they have worked very hard for this
recognition. I hope that more schools will follow their example
and work towards achieving NHSS in the year ahead."
