Liberal
Democrat leader's election welcomed by Burnham politicians
Liberal
Democrats in Burnham and Highbridge have welcomed the appointment
of Nick Clegg as their newly apppointed party leader.
Mr
Clegg, who visited Highbridge's King Alfred School in March when
he met students and local politicians (pictured), beat Chris Huhne
in the party's leadership contest.
It
was announced on Tuesday (December 18th) that Mr Clegg had narrowly
won a poll of party members, much to the delight of Burnham's
Lib Dem prospective parliamentary candidate Tessa Munt.
She
told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Tuesday: "It's fabulous news and
very good for our party. Nick has the ability to reach out to
those who don't vote any longer. A lot of people are disaffected
with the two main parties - here in the Burnham and Highbridge
constituency, 27,000 people didn't vote at all last election."
And
Nicky Livings, Chairman of Burnham District Liberal Democrats,
added: "I'm very pleased - I think Nick has plenty of vibrancy
and freshness. Two very good candidates ran for party leader and
I know them both, but I think Nick had the slight edge."
