Highbridge comes to halt as police arrest
two after motorway pursuit

The
centre of Highbridge came to a standstill on
Monday evening (May 28th) after
a dramatic police motorway pursuit ended in the town.
Two
people were taken into custody after being pursued along
the M5 from Gloucestershire in
a Rover Metro
believed to have been stolen.
They
were followed along
the southbound carriageway before
a 'stinger' device was placed near Burnham's M5 exit to puncture
the vehicle's tyres and disable it.
The
vehicle managed to continue along the A38 to Church Street in
the centre of Highbridge where, after a brief chase, police detained
two males believed to be aged 20 and 17 at 5.10pm.
Burnham
police officer Sgt
Julian Brandon told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "The vehicle was
followed by traffic police along the M5 to junction 22 for Burnham."
"Here,
a 'stinger' was successfully used to puncture the vehicle's tyres
and slow its progress."
"On
reaching Church Street in Highbridge, the vehicle came to a halt
and a 20-year-old male tried to make off near Dorset House."
"He
was apprehended along with a second youth and both were arrested
on suspicion of theft of the vehicle."
Police
spokesman Dan Mountain added on Monday that a police helicopter
had also been used to monitor the chase along the M5 from the
air.
The
20 year-old, who is from Highbridge, was arrested and taken to
Weston Police Station before later being bailed and the 17 year-old,
from Bristol, was also arrested and later bailed.
Our
photos show the scene in the centre of Highbridge along with a
broken garden fence which was damaged by one of the fleeing men
during the chase after the vehicle stopped.
