Burnham-On-Sea Sailing Regatta expansion plans unveiled

The UK's national water-skiing championships could return to Burnham-On-Sea for the first time in over 10 years after plans were unveiled this week to expand the town's annual sailing regatta.

The event could be turned into a two or three-day event and run alongside the town's annual Seaside Fun Day, an illuminated sail-past of boats, a continental produce market, and the return of competitive water skiing.

Terry Moul, Commodore of the town's Sailing Club, told Burnham-On-Sea.com he hopes the event may be held in early August to put "Burnham's regatta on a par with some of the big south coast events."

The proposals - which were unveiled at this week's Town Improvements Committee meeting - were welcomed by councillors and the Chamber of Trade, although a lot of final details have yet to be discussed.

Mr Moul's intention is to start the regatta on Friday August 3rd, the same day as the 2007 Seaside Fun Day, when a range of children's activities are held on Burnham beach. This could be followed by the illuminated sail- past of local boats in Bridgwater Bay (pictured above).

A continental market would also be held during the weekend along The Esplanade, similar to the one pictured here last November.

There are also fresh hopes that competitive water-skiing may be about to return to Burnham for the event. This would be the first time the sport has been held here for more than ten years.

"Talks are already underway with the British Water Ski Federation about the plans," Mr Moul told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

"The group was really positive about the idea and said Burnham is a great venue ideal for racing. I am hopeful that if we can guarantee them the facilities, they will return to the town."

The proposals are set to be further discussed by town councillors and representatives from Sedgemoor District Council and Burnham Sailing Club in the coming weeks.
