Ram raiders flee empty-handed after attack on Highbridge supermarket

Highbridge's Somerfield supermarket was closed to customers on Friday morning (December 28th) after ram raiders attacked the store overnight.

These were the scenes at the supermarket - as police and staff inspected the damage to shutters at the front of the store.

Police said the raiders had struck in the early hours of the morning, but fled the scene empty-handed.

Police spokeswoman Mellisa Cullum told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "I can confirm that a ram raid took place at the Somerfield store at around 2.30am."

"A Range Rover type vehicle was used, but nothing was taken from the store. We are appealing for witnesses who saw anything suspicious to get in touch."

Somerfield spokeswoman Julie Daniels told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "Extensive damage was caused to the front of the building but nothing was taken from the store. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed by our security team."

"Customers were invited to use another entrance until the repairs are made to the front of the store."
