New
CCTV camera moves closer for Burnham-On-Sea street
Residents
of a vandalism-hit Burnham-On-Sea street who campaigned for a
CCTV camera earlier this year may soon be granted their wish.
Lucy
Wilmott, Sedgemoor's Community safety Officer, confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com
this week that a temporary CCTV camera is being considered for
the South Street area following a series of problems
earlier this year.
In
February, worried residents spoke out about their "living
nightmare" caused by "escalating violence" stemming
from late night drinkers using the road as a cut-through from
seafront pubs to Shakers night club in the High Street.
Burnham-On-Sea's
MP, David Heathcoat-Amory, visited residents to add his support
to the campaign for changes, as pictured below.
Lucy
Wilmott told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: "We recently carried
out a visit to the site and found that while South Street itself
is not a feasible location for a camera because of its shape and
poor lighting,
the High Street is a better location for monitoring this area."
"We're
therefore considering introducing a temporary CCTV camera and
hope to make a final decision in the next few weeks," she
said.
"We
will also be assessing whether the street's priority is still
the same and whether the problems are as bad as they were earlier
in the year."
