Spoonbill sighting on Stert Island excites Burnham-On-Sea bird watchers

Bird watchers in Burnham-On-Sea were treated to another rare sighting on Stert Island on Tuesday (April 24th).

A Spoonbill similar to the bird pictured here was spotted on the island's muddy shoreline - just days after a large flock of Little Egrets was seen in the same area.

Greg Dye-Hodge Beardsley told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "I was viewing the island with Robert Cropper, a well known local bird watcher, and whilst using my telescope we spotted an unusual bird which upon further viewing turned out to be a Spoonbill. This is quite a rare bird and it seems to be in with the flock of Egrets."

"It was a large Heron-like bird with a long black bill with a broad spoon shaped end. It had a long yellow crest and black legs."

"Having found creatures similar to itself, it may well remain here for a while. It is quite a rarity."
