Vintage steam train provides Highbridge
with a blast from the past!
An
historic steam train rolled through Highbridge
on Sunday (May 27th) when it took hundreds of sightseers from
London to the south coast.
The
Duke of Gloucester locomotive, pictured, passed through Highbridge
at 11.30am on its way to the city of Plymouth.
The
train was originally built in 1954 as the forerunner of a new
breed of modern express steam locomotives but
was discarded in 1962 due to technical problems.
It
was later rescued from a Welsh
scrapyard in 1973 by
a small group of enthusiasts who spent years restoring it to ite
former glory. A
major overhaul was undertaken and the group that runs it received
substantial funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help their
work.
