Exclusive: Asda says sorry to Highbridge family who found slug in salad

-

Supermarket giant Asda has apologised to a Highbridge family after they found a large slug in a bag of salad purchased at its Highbridge store.

Kath Pepperall, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com how she has not been able to eat anything except soup for five days after making the unpleasant discovery last Friday.

“I’d dished up the salad during our family meal and my daughter spotted the brown and white slug, which was the size of a little finger, among the leaves,” she said.

“It was absolutely revolting and turned my stomach – we’d already eaten half the salad and couldn’t finish the meal. I felt very embarrassed because my whole family was there.”

“I returned the bag back to the Highbridge store and the customer service person told me that finding the slug showed how fresh the salad was, which I found insulting. I was only partially refunded for the whole meal, which we threw away and I felt annoyed with how it had been handled.”

Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com on Wednesday (May 28th), Asda spokesman James Maxton said: “Although every measure is taken to ensure that fresh produce grown outside doesn’t include little surprises, it does happen on a very rare basis but when it does, our colleagues will bend over backwards to ensure that adequate recompense is given to the customer.”

“On this occasion, we are confident that the colleague provided excellent service. The customer was refunded the cost of the bag of salad plus all other salad items and the cost of the steaks.”

“Additionally, she was provided with the duty manager’s name and number, a phone number for Asda Head Office and the case was logged in case she wanted to escalate it further.”
