Walkers
set to stride out for charity along Burnham beach
Walkers
are being encouraged to step forward to take part in the annual
fundraising walk between Burnham-On-Sea and Brean Down to raise
money for the Alzheimers Society.
The
15-mile beach walk will start at 11.30am on Sunday May 25th from
Burnham Pier and will include time for a picnic or lunch in the
Brean Cove Café. A shorter, eight-mile walk is also available
to the entrance of Berrow Beach and return.
Almost
100 people, some dressed in colourful fancy dress, took part in
last
year's walk as pictured here and organiser Mike Barsby says
over 140 are already signed up as participants this year.
"Among
those taking part will be students from King Alfred School, a
group of senior citizens, and a dozen firemen from Bristol,"
Mike told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
He
added: "Previous beach walks have been very enjoyable events
with a relaxed atmosphere and the event attracts people of all
ages and abilities. The distance is quite manageable for most
people and its a great opportunity to get some exercise
and see parts of our beach that you may not have visited before.
Apart from enjoying the walk and the company of others the main
purpose is to raise a couple of thousand pounds for the Alzheimer's
Society!"
"Alzheimers
can affect anyone statistics show that 1 in 4 people know
or have known someone with Alzeimers or Dementia."
"In
my case it was my mother Joyce, her memory deteriorated so badly
that in the last months of her life she could not remember the
names of her close family. So, please, get a group of friends
and family together and join us on May 25th."
This
year, Mike is hoping to attract at least 150 walkers and whilst
this is mainly a fun event, for those with a competitive nature
medals will be awarded to the first ten walkers who arrive at
Brean Down and all participants will be awarded a Beach Walk 2008
certificate. The event is being sponsored by Sanders Garden World.
