Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor praises ‘bloom’ organisers as town wins silver

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor has thanked the organisers of the town’s entry into the Britain In Bloom competition after the town was awarded second place in its category in the south west regional awards on Thursday (September 18th).

Burnham was awarded a silver gilt award in the Sergent Cup, which is open to mid-sized towns across the region.

The results were announced at a special ceremony held in Plymouth on Thursday which was attended by Burnham In Bloom representatives, including Chairman Dave Perrett (pictured right) and Secretary Richard Young.

Burnham-On-Sea was joint second with Chard and Ilfracombe in its class, which was won by Thornbury.

Organisers were delighted to hear the news after Burnham performed poorly last year.

“It’s an excellent result and is a big improvement from 2007,” Mr Perrett told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “We were in a tough category this year, competing against some outstanding towns like St Ives and Sidmouth, so we’re really delighted to have won a silver award.”

The news was also welcomed by Burnham Mayor, Peter Clayton, who told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Thursday evening: “This is excellent news and a great reward for all the hard work that has been put in by the Burnham In Bloom committee and all their helpers who made the town look so colourful this summer.”

Judges from the competition visited Burnham in July (pictured on the right and featured here) when they gave an upbeat assessment of the town.

Richard Young, Secretary of the Highbridge and Burnham in Bloom Committee, said the judges had been very impressed with the town’s entry: “One of the judges said that there was a marked improvement on last year and congratulated members of the Bloom committee and the staff of Sedgemoor District Council and the Friends of Apex Park group for all their hard work.”

An awards presentation evening will be held in Burnham’s Jaycroft Road Town Council chambers on Friday October 24th at 7.15pm when the silver gilt award will be formally handed over.
