boat owners attack winter car parking charge plans
The
introduction of winter car parking fees along Burnham seafront
has been heavily criticised by boat owners in the town this week.
Burnham
Boat Owners Association is unhappy with Sedgemoor District Council's
decision to introduce year-round car parking fees on The Esplanade
from this October, as recently
revealed here.
Pete
Nicholson, Chairman of the group, told town councillors at a meeting
on Monday (April 7th): "The winter charging along The Esplanade
due to start this coming October would put a great burden on our
members."
He
added: "Our club's fishing season and competitions are mainly
held in the winter months to avoid the holiday season."
"It
is with disappointment that Sedgemoor are trying to bring winter
charging on the Esplanade again. Burnham Boat Owners has been
in existance for over 30 years and plans its events so as not
to compromise any events which SDC or the town council hold on
The Esplanade."
"Since
the introduction of summer charging, members attending our competitions
have dwindled. Winter charges would put a 40 per cent increase
on the cost of taking part in one of our competitons or day fishing
for our members."
"As
for the recent survey held into the cost of parking and launching
fees in other areas, Burnham's prices are probably on a par with
the others but, for instance, Baiter car park in Poole charges
£6 but provides boat wash down facilities."
"Government
findings prove that recreational fishing brings in more revenue
than commercial fishing to local businesses. Winter charging will
not only drive us out of town - but locals too."
Mr
Nicholson's comments have also been endorsed by Burnham Chamber
of Trade, which earlier
this year said it was also not in favour of winter car parking
charges.
Last
week, Burnham-On-Sea.com reported
that boat owners plan to send dozens of letters to councillors
expressing their opposition to an increased in jetty launch. The
annual cost of permits rose on April 1st from £15 to £20
and boat owners must now also have public liability insurance
for £3million before they use the jetty.
