Busy Brean pedestrian
crossing set to be upgraded
Somerset
County Council is to upgrade a pedestrian crossing in the centre
of Brean later this month.
The
highways department is carrying out work to traffic signals in
South Road, Brean outside Pontins holiday camp (pictured) from
Monday 28th January. The work to upgrade the pelican crossing
is expected to last five days.
"Pedestrians
are advised to cross the carriageway with extra care while the
work is being carried out, if they cannot re-plan their activities
on those days," said a spokeswoman.
"This
crossing is being upgraded from a pelican to a puffin crossing
- puffin crossings are more reactive to pedestrian and vehicle
demand."
Motorists
will find the crossing signals will change, as there will no longer
be a flashing amber signal. The sequence will change to that of
a standard traffic signal. For pedestrians, the crossing will
change as the red man / green man will be on their nearside immediately
above the push buttons.
The
council also said the new crossing will also be more efficient
by reducing energy consumption.
