Burnham-On-Sea
bus
travellers face fare rise of six per cent
Bus
passengers in Burnham-On-Sea will find fares on local services
have risen by an average of six per cent this week.
Operator
First has blamed the need to introduce the increases - which came
into operation on Monday - on rising fuel costs.
It
says the decision was not taken lightly and that it has held back
on reviewing fares for as long as possible, making efficiency
savings, but the increasing cost of fuel has meant the company
has no choice but to increase fares.
First's
Managing Director in Somerset, Justin Davies, said in a statement
on Monday (September 1st): "We are all too aware that fuel
prices have been steadily creeping up since the start of the year.
They are now significantly higher than they were in January and
they have more than quadrupled since 2002."
"We know that nobody likes it when prices go up, but we have
tried to keep increases as small as possible. On average, fares
in the network have risen by six percent."
