Future of Burnham-On-Sea's annual seafront display is saved
Burnham-On-Sea's
annual seafront fireworks display has been saved thanks to the
financial support of local businesses and residents, the Town
Council announced on Tuesday morning (July 29th).
Cash-strapped
Sedgemoor District Council withdrew its financial support for
the event in March, due
to the authority's huge £1.8m financial shortfall, and this
meant businesses and residents were urged to come forward with
donations to save it.
The
Town Council's Fireworks Working Party set a deadline of the end
of July to raise the £8,000 needed to hold the event - and
at a council meeting on Monday (July 28th), councillors confirmed
they had now raised enough funding to go ahead.
Town
Clerk Eileen Shaw told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Tuesday morning:
"I'm delighted to say we have raised enough funding to go
ahead with this year's display on Sunday 9th November."
"We
will be contacting the Skyburst, the company that provides the
fireworks, later today to let them know that we will be going
ahead with a 20-minute display."
She
added: "We are very grateful to all those who have supported
the event by donating money. It is not too late to make a pledge
to ensure that this much appreciated display continues for this
year and future years."
