New
food recycling service to
launch in Burnham-On-Sea this May
Six
hundred households in Burnham-On-Sea will soon be able to recycle
food waste, plastic bottles and cardboard items when a brand new
home recycling scheme launches in the town this May.
The
trials for new waste and recycling collections are to be launched
in Burnham by the Somerset Waste Partnership, it was announced
on Thursday (March 27th).
The
trials will see home collections introduced for food waste, plastic
bottles and cardboard.
Cllr
Stuart Kingham, Sedgemoor District Councils Portfolio Holder
for Environmental Health and Clean Surroundings, pictured below,
told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "We are very pleased to be involved
in these trials, which we expect will allow a recycling rate of
at least 50% - twice that currently achieved in Sedgemoor."
"The
trials will run from this May to April 2009. At the end of this
period, decisions will be taken about continuing the new arrangements
and, if affordable, extending the best collection options to other
areas."
Notification
packs will be delivered to Burnham residents on the trial rounds
shortly, which will include details of the new collections.
Bins
and boxes for the new collections will then be delivered in early
May and the trials will start during the week commencing 19th
May.
The
trial round in Burnham will involve approxmately 600 households
and a roadshow with further details will be held on Tuesday 8th
April from 10am-2pm at Burnham Community Centre in Berrow Road.
A
second roadshow will be held on Wednesday 9th April from 2pm
6pm at East Brent Village Hall in Jarvis Lane, East Brent, near
Highbridge.
The
'Sort It Plus' trials will see weekly collections of food waste,
with an internal caddy and external bin with lockable handle provided;
plus continued recycling collections with a box provided for paper,
glass, cans, foil, textiles and car batteries.
An
additional stackable recycling box will be provided for plastic
bottles and cardboard, and there will also be fortnightly collections.
There will be an optional charge for composting garden waste collections.
