Long queues on M5 motorway after tanker accident at Burnham-On-Sea

These were the scenes on the M5 motorway at Burnham-On-Sea on Wednesday morning (January 2nd) as motorists faced long delays after a two-vehicle accident.

One lane was closed northbound between junctions 23 at North Petherton and 22 at Burnham following the accident at 9.50am.

Police reported traffic was at a standstill in the area as fire crews, police and Highways Agency staff made safe a ruptured fuel tank on the tanker, which had been struck during a collision with a car.

"The Highways Agency was in attendance and helped to drain the lorry's fuel tank," police spokesman Wayne Baker told Burnham-On-Sea.com. "Traffic was at a standstill, with long delays between junction 22 and junction 23."

He added that there had been no injuries. Click here for video footage from the scene.
