The River Brue estuary in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge is the focus for a local photography competition which has launched this week.

HaBA, the Highbridge and Burnham Artists group, is inviting entries for its competition to mark the River Brue Visual Arts Festival, which is to be held this July and August.

"The River Brue is the interconnecting link between our two towns and there are so many wonderful scenes to be captured along its route," said Chris Abbott, pictured, a local photographer who is one of the contest's organisers.

The competition, called 'What's Brue'ing', is open to all non-professionals, who can enter up to three of their favourite images of the river and its surroundings either in digital or non-digital format.

Winning entries will be displayed in 20 shop windows and other locations across Burnham and Highbridge from July 21st until August 8th this summer. Burnham's Chamber of Trade members have agreed to support the event by framing and exhibiting of winning entries.

There will also be a gallery of entries on display on Saturday 2nd August at Highbridge Community Hall where entries will be on show during a special Highbridge History Project day.

Rules of the competition are shown at the bottom of this page and an entry form is available online here.

Sue Quatermass, Community Development Worker for the Regeneration Partnership, has been supporting the competition.

She said: "By focussing on the River Brue as the theme for our festival and the photographic exhibition, the history and the changing nature of our relationship with the landscape will be highlighted."

Completed forms together with either a digital image or a 10x8 print should be emailed to or posted to arrive at HABA Photography Competition, 12 Littlemoor Road, Mark, Somerset TA9 4NG before 5pm on Monday 30th June 2008.

The River Brue Visual Arts Festival - which will include a sculpture display along the river banks and various workshops - is being supported by Burnham and Highbridge Regeneration Partnership, Sedgemoor District Council, Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, Burnham Chamber of Trade, Somerset Arts Week, and Cllr Rosemary Parsons.
