Man arrested after armed police swoop on flat in Highbridge

Police confirmed on Monday morning (January 21st) that a 49-year-old man had been arrested in connection with an incident that brought the centre of Highbridge to a halt on Saturday.

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported on Saturday how six teams of officers had rushed to Market Street amid reports that a white male armed with a crow bar had entered a flat near to Smarts Newsagents.

Police spokesman Dan Mountain said on Monday: "Police were called to deal with a tenancy dispute at 2.55pm in Market Street. A 49-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and assault and taken to Bridgwater Police Station."

"He was given a formal caution for two counts of criminal damage and the assault counts were dropped."

Police officers from an armed response unit were seen entering the building equipped with riot shields - as pictured above.
