Highbridge's King Alfred Sports Centre praised by OFSTED inspectors
Staff
and youngsters at Highbridge's King Alfred Sports Centre are celebrating
this week after being praised by inspectors from OFSTED.
The centre's holiday club opened just 12 months ago and operates
from sports halls, outdoor courts, and two first floor rooms within
the centre at the rear of King Alfred School.
Duty
Manager Graham Furze told Burnham-On-Sea.com he is delighted with
OFSTED's comments.
"It's
a fantastic achievement to get such praise after just one year
of operation. All the hard work has been well worth it, and all
the team are delighted with OFSTED's comments," he said.
OFSTED
inspector Claire Sheldrake praised the centre's child safety arrangements,
and its ability to help children achieve various skills.
The
inspector's report states: "Children have many opportunities
to enjoy physical activities. They can choose from daily team
games in the sports halls, such as dodge ball or cricket, or they
can register for activities such as trampolining, archery, dance,
football and basket ball as part of 'Active Kidz'."
"Staff
are good at engaging the children to help them grow in independence
and confidence. They encourage them to have a go and take part."
"All
children from the local community are encouraged to participate.
Activities such as wheelchair basketball help the children to
recognise and respect those with disabilities."
The
effectiveness of the centre's provision and organisation was also
commended as 'satisfactory'.
The
centre's holiday club offers four sessions each day from 8.30am
to 5.30pm throughout the school holidays. The registration is
set for a maximum of 40 children between the ages of five to eight
years old, although the club does accept children up to the age
of 14. For more details, call 01278 786868.
