Swimmers ready for Burnham-On-Sea’s annual Stert Island Swim

-

Eighty swimmers will run into the sea at the start of Burnham-On-Sea’s annual Stert Island Swim this Sunday (July 27th).

The entry period for the popular event began in May and was due to remain open until mid-July, but all 80 places were quickly filled ahead of schedule.

The unique 2,400m race, which this year starts at 1.30pm, will see the participants swim from Burnham beach to Stert Island and back. A large crowd of spectators is expected to line The Esplanade to watch.

West Country Tri-Athletes took over the organisation of the annual summer event in February after Sedgemoor District Council said it could no longer afford to run it.

Organiser Sara Hudghton of West Country Triathletes told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’re delighted there has been such a lot of interest from the swimmers. We’ll have a capacity number of participants and are hoping that good weather will also bring out a good crowd of onlookers.”

The event is being supported by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, BARB, the RNLI, Natural England, Taunton Canoe Club and Wessex Ambulance Service. The 2007 event was cancelled at the last minute due to strong winds.
