Sale of Burnham-On-Sea
public toilets edges closer
The
controversial sale of
a block of public toilets in Burnham-On-Sea has edged a step closure
this week after several bidders came forward to buy the building.
Burnham-On-Sea.com
reported last month
how Sedgemoor
District Council had extended the deadline
for bidders to express an interest in buying the property
in
Sea View Road, pictured.
Three
bidders have come forward and the proposals to sell off the building
are now set to be considered at the next meeting of the district
council's Executive Committee.
The
news that the toilets are up for sale has annoyed town councillors
who were assured several times that the facility was not in jeopardy.
The
district council began inviting bids in
March from
firms interested in buying the building, even though it had said
last
November that the loos would re-open in time for the start of
this year's tourist season.
Tim
Mander from the district council's valuation office confirmed
to Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: "Several bids have come
forward following our advert in the trade press and these will
be considered at the next Executive meeting."
The
toilets were temporarily closed in April
2007 amid vandalism and anti-social behaviour and have never
re-opened despite pressure from the town council and tourism bosses,
who argue that more public loos are needed.
