Cheers! Burnham pub takes part in world record wine tasting bid

-

Staff and regulars at a Burnham-On-Sea pub had an extra special reason to lift their glasses this week when they attempted to break the world record for the largest-ever simultaneous wine tasting.

More than thirty wine lovers at The Reeds Arms on Burnham seafront were among the thousands of drinkers taking part in a nationwide bid at 680 Wetherspoon pubs across the UK.

Independent witnesses were brought in to each pub to check how many drinkers were participating in order to calculate whether the previous record of 5,100 simultaneous wine drinkers had been surpassed.

Simon Chick, Shift Manager of The Reeds Arms (pictured above), told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The record attempt here in Burnham was very well supported. Everyone enjoyed trying some great Californian wines and is now eagerly waiting to find out whether we’ve broken the world record.”

Eddie Gershon, a spokesman for JD Wetherspoon, added: “We should know in a fortnight’s time whether the record has been broken. The numbers of drinkers from each pub are being sent to Guinness for them to confirm the final tally.”

The event was held at the start of a two-week wine festival being held at Wetherspoon pubs across the UK.
