Over 1,000 children and their families from across Somerset flocked to Highbridge’s Apex Park on Wednesday (August 5th) for a fun-packed day of holiday activities.

Called ‘Sedgemoor Playday’, the event included more than 30 workshops and activities including climbing, rope and bridge building, kite making, face painting, archery and arts and crafts making.

The successful event was boosted by a day of hot summer weather and was run by Sedgemoor District Council, the County Council, the Friends of Apex Park and Somerset Community Foundation.

The day was part of a nationwide scheme to encourage thousands of children and young people to get outside and play at locally organised events.

All ages of children came along and they were encouaged to have a go at various activities, from sports events such as rounders and egg and spoon races to bouncy slides and hula-hooping!

Visitors were also able to see one of Burnham’s two rescue hovercrafts and learn how to play safely on local beaches.

Burnham-On-Sea police were also in attendance to give advice on how to security mark childrens’ bicycles and other play equipment. And Burnham Fire Brigade were also in attendance, letting youngsters clamber onboard a fire engine.
