Nervous wait for Berrow’s People’s Millions bid team after phone vote

-

Thousands of votes were cast in favour of Berrow winning a TV competition to secure £50,000 of funding for a new play area in the village on Monday (November 23rd).

As we first reported earlier this month, the parish council’s application for funding to refurbish the play area on the Village Green has been short-listed to receive lottery funding – but to get the cash, the Berrow campaigners needed to win Monday’s TV vote, overseen by ITV West.

Hundreds of votes were cast by Burnham-On-Sea.com readers, with one member of our discussion forums even making 140 votes on separate phones to stick to the rules of ten votes per phone line!

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported earlier this year how residents had submitted an application to The Big Lottery People’s Millions scheme back in May in a bid to win the £50,000 of funding.

They want to transform the current, old-fashioned play area into a safe, modern and challenging environment called Berrow’s Empowering Play Area (BEPA).

Parish Council’s Chairman, Jenny Bentley, appealed to viewers to vote in favour of the village’s scheme. She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Viewers are being asked to choose between our project and one other from the ITV regional news area. The one that receives the most votes will be declared the winner and will be given the grant of £50,000. This is a huge amount and will transform our play area on the Village Green and turn our dreams into reality.”

Voting lines closed at midnight on Monday and the results will be announced shortly.
