-

A young speedway rider from the Burnham-based Somerset Rebels team is in hospital after being seriously injured in an accident.

17 year-old Brendan Johnson, pictured, was taking part in an Isle of Wight National League fixture in Smallbrook on Thursday evening (August 20th) when he sustained head and other injuries in a high-speed crash.

“He was initially taken to St Mary’s Hospital, from where he was later airlifted to Southampton General Hospital’s intensive care unit,” Rebels spokesman Dave Thompson told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Mr Thompson added: “The latest news is that he has swellings on his brain, and has been put into an induced coma to allow the injury to heal.”

“The thoughts of everyone connected with Somerset Speedway are with Brendan and his family at this time.”

Another rider, Nick Simmons, was also injured a separate accident at the same fixture and suffered neck injuries. He was released from hospital on Friday with heavy bruising.
