Burnham
welcomes former solider during 200-mile fundraising walk

A
Devon pensioner was given a warm welcome to Burnham-On-Sea on
Tuesday morning (September 1st) when he strode through the town
during a 200-mile walk to raise funds for British soldiers wounded
in conflicts.
Collection
buckets were rattling as Doug Hamilton-Cox, 65, walked through
the centre of Highbridge to Apex Wildlife Park, then up Marine
Drive to the seafront, where holidaymakers were happy to drop
coins into his collection buckets.
Doug
began his sponsored walk last Thursday (August 27th) in aid of
Help For Heroes, a charity close to his heart as a former soldier.
He
set off from his home near Exeter and has already passed through
Wellington, Taunton and Bridgwater, raising more than £1,700.
He
will continue through Weston-Super-Mare on Wednesday 2nd September,
before going on to Nailsea, Wraxall, Bristol and Wootton Bassett.
Numerous
police officers have joined him along the way, walking a mile
or so with him, and members of Burnham police were joined by members
of the town's Coastguards and BARB on Tuesday.
Doug
told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "I've had a wonderful welcome in
Burnham and thank everyone for their support and encouragement."
"As
an ex-soldier I read in the papers about the families of fallen
soldiers and my heart goes out to them. I
felt I wanted to raise money for the charity and a walk to Wootton
Bassett seemed appropriate."
Anyone
who didn't meet Doug in town can still donate money via his fundraising
page at http://www.justgiving.com/hamilton-cox/
