Four residents from the Burnham-On-Sea area were presented with awards for their service to the community when the town’s annual Civic Service was held on Sunday afternoon (July 5th).

The Mayor of Burnham and Highbridge, Cllr Derick Cooper, and Somerset’s Deputy Lieutenant, Lt Col David Eliot, handed out the awards during a special service at St John’s Church attended by over 200 community leaders and representatives from groups.

Hazel Braund, Mike Young, Richard Matthews and Annette Haggitt were all nominated for their volunteer work – read more details here.

The hour-long service was led by the Mayor’s Chaplain, Rev Robin Lodge, who is Curate of St John’s Church.

It was preceded by a procession of civic dignitaries to the church, pictured above, which included Burnham’s MP David Heathcoat-Amory. See more photos.

During the service, Cllr Cooper thanked the four for their “wonderful commitment to the community” while Lt Col Eliot said it was “a great honour to be presenting awards to such deserving people.”

Speaking to Burnham-On-Sea.com after the event , Mr Heathcoat-Amory said: “These awards demonstrate how ordinary people do many extraordinary things in our local community. Many volunteers go unthanked, so awards like this are very important.”
