Burnham-On-Sea’s beach boating pool is to be dismantled and removed next year, but proposals to axe the town’s Civic Pride regeneration project were dramatically halted at a meeting this morning (Wednesday, December 16th).

Members of Sedgemoor District Council’s Executive met in Bridgwater to discuss a list of controversial cost-cutting proposals.

A group of Burnham residents, led by the Chamber of Trade’s Alex Turco, spoke in support of keeping the town’s regeneration project alive – particularly in light of the decision by the South West Regional Development Agency earlier this year not to give Burnham £750,000 of funding.

Members of the Executive agreed to keep £330,000 of funding in place – for now – to fund a number of town centre improvements.

But, unfortunately, Burnham’s boating pool could not be saved and the council’s Executive decided not to spend further money on repairing it.

The pool – which acts as a war memorial – will be removed next year and a plaque on the sea wall is expected to be introduced instead.

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in August that the concrete base of the landmark was falling apart and the pool itself had suffered water leaks for months.
