Tree to be planted in memory of former Burnham-On-Sea Mayor

A tree is to be planted in memory of a former Mayor of Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge later this week.

The special ceremony in remembrance of the late Denis Hewings, pictured, will be held this Saturday (March 7th) at 2pm at the Burnham Area Youth Centre in Cassis Close, in conjunction with members of Burnham and Highbridge Town Council.

Mr Hewings was awarded a Civic Award by the town council to recognise his work for both towns. He died in 2007, as reported here, after a long-running throat problem.

He also functioned as the BAY Centre's self-designated caretaker, gardener and general handyman. Sadly, his health eventually deteriorated so much that he was forced to give up the roles.

His support for the centre is still missed and BAY Centre Chairman Julia Elswood told "When the council asked if they could plant a tree in his memory, we thought it an excellent idea. The BAY Centre owes him a debt of gratitude that can never be fully repaid."

All are welcome to attend the ceremony, which will be followed by refreshments in the BAY Centre.
