Drain
covers along Burnham-On-Sea seafront haven't been stolen!
Speculation
that a dozen drain covers had been stolen from Burnham-On-Sea's
Esplanade during the past week were quashed on Monday (June 8th)
when Somerset County Council said it had simply been taking them
away for repairs.
Many
of the drains along the South Esplanade were cordoned off over
the weekend, as pictured, prompting rumours that the metal grates
had been stolen and sold on for scrap metal.
But
Jan Hookings, a spokeswoman for Somerset's highways department,
confirmed on Monday (June 8th): "I can confirm that none
have been stolen."
"They are simply being repaired and rewelded by our team.
We are replacing them as part of an ongoing highways programme
in Burnham."
