Police have today (Sunday July 5th) renewed their appeal for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision on the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday evening.

One person – a woman from the London area – died in the collision, while a man who was air-lifted from the scene remains in a critical condition at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol – as reported here on Saturday night.

Police re-opened the motorway at about 9.45pm on Saturday after conducting a full examination of the scene, pictured above.

Police spokesman Wayne Baker told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have been travelling along the M5 between junctions 21 at Weston and 22 at Burnham on the southbound carriageway at the time of the collision about 4.30pm if they have any information to help with enquiries into the incident.”

Those with information are asked to contact the force’s collision investigation unit on 0845 456 7000.

The car lost control and left the carriageway before bursting into flames.

The lady who was trapped in the vehicle was declared dead at the scene, and a man who was freed by the emergency services was taken by air ambulance to Bristol.
