Burnham-On-Sea man becomes ‘British fishmonger of the year’

-

A Burnham-On-Sea fish shop is celebrating this week after one of its staff was awarded the title ‘Britain’s Young Fishmonger of the Year’.

Matt Murray, 23, has worked at Sea Foods in Burnham High Street for five years, and was delighted to land the sought-after award at a ceremony in Cardiff on Sunday (August 30th) organised by the National Federation of Fishmongers.

Matt told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It came completely out of the blue, so I was very surprised and delighted to win.”

“I was up against fishmongers from several big supermarket chains, and we were the only independent shop up for an award, so it was great to do so well.”

To the sound of loud cheers, Matt collected a £120 cash prize and a certificate at the ceremony. The awards were held during a three-day sea festival in Cardiff, with several thousand people in attendance.

Sea Foods owner Stephen Wright told Burnham-On-Sea.com that Matt definitely deserves the award. “He is a model employee and we are all delighted that he’s won,” he said.
