A regular market is set to return to Highbridge town centre from November, it was announced on Monday (October 19th).
Following the closure of the weekly Sunday markets which used to operate from the cattle market site, Sedgemoor District Council has been in discussions with a company called Market Forces and a deal has been struck to re-introduce a market.
It will initially be held on a three-month trial basis, from the Bank Street Car Park, pictured, each Sunday from November 1st.
Sundays are the quietest times of the week for the car park and while the market will take up 50 spaces, there will still be 59 left for public use.
Highbridge district councillor Joe Leach (pictured above), was first to propose holding a market in the car park and told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Monday: “This is fantastic news for Highbridge.”
“More work has to be done in rejuvenating the town, but this is a positive step forward. I’m very pleased the market is returning and would urge people to support it.”
Sedgemoor’s Portfolio Holder for Community Services, Cllr John Swayne, added: “This move is a vote of confidence for the centre of Highbridge and will increase the income generation from a car park which is not well frequented on Sundays. Sedgemoor is hopeful that this trial will be a success and will increase trade in and around the centre of the town.”
Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported on plans to introduce a market in the car park in June this year.
