Burnham-On-Sea’s MP will repay more expenses after auditor’s review

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s MP has this week agreed to pay back more of his expenses after a review by a Parliament auditor.

David Heathcoat-Amory hit the headlines in April over expense claims he made for bags of manure.

On Monday, he was among many MPs sent a letter asking for more money to be repaid following an expenses review by Parliament auditor Sir Thomas Legg.

Mr Heathcoat-Amory, who has already paid back £390 worth of gardening claims on his constituency home, said he had been told to return further money, dating back almost five years.

In a statement, he said: “Although these claims were approved at the time, I will comply fully with Sir Thomas Legg’s recommended pay-back of amounts above his new annual limits, once these have been determined accurately.”

“This review confirms that that my allowances over these five years included no false claims, mortgage ‘flipping’ or purchase of capital items.”

“It consolidates my position as having the lowest overall allowance claims amongst Somerset MPs, and the second lowest in the South West.”
