This week’s planned opening of a new £140,000 play area at Highbridge’s Apex Park has been postponed due to delays in getting hold of some of the equipment, the district council said this week.
Duncan McGinty, leader of Sedgemoor District Council, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Apex Park’s new play area was meant to be open this week.”
“However, due to the overwhelming success of play schemes across the country, there has been a national manufacturing shortage of play equipment.”
“Several items of equipment are still to arrive, including a trampoline, Springboard, slide and a twinfly.”
“The other equipment should be delivered next week. Unfortunately, the play area will have to be kept fenced off until the equipment has been installed and the area has been inspected.”
Cllr Ann Bown, the district council’s portfolio holder for health and well-being, led a turf-cutting ceremony at the site in September (as pictured above).
Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported earlier this year how the so-called ‘playscape’ is being created at the site using £60,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, a further £73,462 from developer contributions, and £6,538 from the district council.
The play area was originally due to open in time for the start of the summer holidays but was delayed to shortages of equipment.
Once complete, the area will include new mounds, a new bridge, tunnel, embankment slides, a log hide and den, climbing pieces, as well as pod swings.
