Burnham
Coastguards called to help teenagers in River Axe estuary
Just
hours after they issued a warning about the dangers of crossing
the treacherous River Axe estuary between Weston and Brean Down,
Coastguards were called out to help a group of teenagers spotted
crossing the muddy river on Wednesday evening (July 1st).
Coastguards
from Burnham-On-Sea and Weston carried out a foot search of the
shores on either side of the river after two teenagers were seen
wading through the deep mud between Weston and the rocky shores
of Brean Down.
Burnham
Coastguard Station Officer Steve Bird told Burnham-On-Sea.com:
"Footprints were seen leading from Weston across the river
bed to Brean before wending their way up the estuary."
"They
seem to have made their way back to Weston, where they were met
by Weston Coastguards."
"It's
almost unbelievable that young people are putting themselves in
danger like this."
"The
mud here can be very dangerous and we would urge people to take
notice of the warning signs and stay well clear."
The
incident came after Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards issuing a warning,
reported here,
following the publication on YouTube of a group of youngsters
claiming to have crossed from Weston to Brean Down.
