Burnham-On-Sea postal deliveries halted during strike action

-

Post collections and deliveries in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge were halted on Friday (October 23rd) when Royal Mail workers held a one day strike.

A picket line of over 40 staff was set up outside the sorting office in Dunstan Road, as pictured here.

Stan Howlett, Burnham’s union representative, told Burnham-On-Sea.com on the picket line: “Today’s action is not about pay, it’s about trying to safeguard mail services for our customers here in Burnham.”

“There is a strong feeling among the staff here that the mail service will change for the worse if current Royal Mail proposals go ahead.”

“Mail deliveries will become far more expensive, deliveries will be made at different times of the day, and customers could have to collect post themselves from various locations.”

He added that just two staff had crossed the Burnham picket line on Friday morning. Another day’s industrial action is being planned next week if an agreement between unions and Royal Mail cannot be reached.
