Burnham-On-Sea’s Somerfield supermarket is to be rebranded as a Morrisons store after a change of ownership.

Confirming rumours which appeared first on Burnham-On-Sea.com, the supermarket giant announced the move on Tuesday (January 20th).

The store in Pier Street has been sold by the Co-Operative Group, subject to agreement from the Office of Fair Trading.

Staff were told about the sale several days ago and those currently working there will join Morrisons following the handover.

Morrisons group store operations director Mark Gunter said in a statement issued on Tuesday: “We look forward to serving the people of Burnham.”

“In the coming weeks, we will hold welcome meetings, one-to-one sessions and full company inductions with all our new colleagues.”

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in January 2008 about rumours that the store was up for sale. The reports were denied at the time.
