Fears raised over Highbridge take-away’s bid to open until 1.30am

-

Town councillors have this week raised concerns that a Highbridge take-away’s plans to extend its weekend opening hours until 1.30am could lead to public disorder issues.

Yummies Pizza in Market Street has applied to the district council to extend its opening hours until 1.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.

However, concerned town councillors this week lodged an official objection in an effort to stop the plans going ahead.

Highbridge councillors Janet Keen and Joe Leach both spoke out against the proposals during a debate at Monday’s town council meeting.

Cllr Leach told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Market Street is in a residential area and selling take away food until 1.30am would lead to an increase in people coming and going very late into the night, disturbing local residents.”

“We might also see such opening hours causing public disorder issues. We have seen previous problems along Market Street in the past and don’t want to risk these re-occuring.”

“A dangerous precedent would be set for other businesses if the 1.30am opening were given approval.”

Sedgemoor District Council will have the final say on whether the scheme is approved.
