A motorist was treated for burns after his car – pictured here – burst into flames near Burnham-On-Sea on Friday afternoon (June 25th).

Police, ambulance and fire crews from Burnham were called to the A38, near the busy Edithmead roundabout, shortly after 3.15pm when the car caught alight.

Fire spokesman Paul Slavin told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Crews used one foam jet, one hose reel jet and two breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire.”

“The fire was caused by either petrol or oil igniting on the hot exhaust manifold. The vehicle was completely destroyed.”

The driver attempted to put out the fire himself before crews arrived and that is when he suffered burns to his hand and forearm.

The northbound lane of the A38 was temporarily closed while the emergency services were at the scene, with police diverted traffic around the scene. Long queues built up around the area.
