100 allotments to be created as ‘grow your own’ popularity increases

-

A field near Burnham-On-Sea is set to be divided up into dozens of allotments for the general public.

Sanders Garden World has submitted a planning application to the district council to turn land to the south of the Brent Knoll garden centre, pictured above, into 100 allotments.

Store manager Peter Burks told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There’s currently a lot of interest in land to grow your own food. Since the allotments in Burnham and Highbridge have long waiting lists of several years, we’re hoping to create these new facilities.”

“In a recession, growing your own food is attractive as it’s far cheaper than buying.”

He added: “With gardening tools, seeds and other materials on sale here, we think this would make a perfect location.”

The store, owned by garden centre chain Wyevale, will make an annual charge for the land – but Mr Burks said no figures will be announced until after planning consent is given.
