‘Suspicious’ blaze extinguished by Burnham fire crew

-

A plume of smoke towered over the outskirts of Highbridge on Tuesday afternoon (May 11th) when fire crews were called to tackle a “suspicious” blaze.

Firefighters were called to Alstone Road at 1pm, as pictured here, when a resident reported seeing the thick black smoke.

“A large amount of rubbish was believed to have been set alight maliciously,” fire brigade spokesman Paul Slavin told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“One hose reel jet and other equipment was used to bring the fire under control.”

It is the latest in a spate of local fires that are believed to have been started deliberately during recent weeks.

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported on other suspicious fires on May 5th and April 15th at the former Highbridge Hotel site. Separately, a car was damaged on April 20th when a fence was set alight in the town centre.
