Burnham police step up lake patrols after youngsters seen on ice

-

Burnham-On-Sea police have this week issued a warning about the danger of icy lakes after several youngsters were spotted walking across thin ice at Apex Park in Highbridge on Thursday.

Inspector Roger Tolley from Burnham Police told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Police were called to Apex Park this morning amid concern for the safety of several youngsters who had gone out to the island across the ice.”

“This is unbelievably dangerous and I would strongly urge no-one to consider walking on frozen lakes.”

“The youngsters were spoken to and given advice about how dangerous the ice is, particularly when it is thawing.”

“The last thing we want is someone falling in, risking their own life and putting rescuers in jeopardy as well.”

He added: “Patrols have been stepped up at the Morland Lake and Apex Park, but we cannot be everywhere all the time and would suggest that any walker who sees someone on the lake calls them off.”

The warning comes just 24 hours after fire crews had to rescue a man at Apex Park after he tried to reach his dog in one of the lakes, as reported here.
