Highbridge boxers are ‘pleased as punch’ with grant donation

-

Members of a Highbridge boxing club received a knockout donation of £1,500 from the town’s Mayor on Saturday evening (September 4th).

Mayor and Mayoress Michael and Maria Clarke attended King Alfred Boxing Club’s annual presentation night at the Crossways Inn in West Huntspill where the cheque, from Somerset’s Community Foundation, was formally handed over.

The club’s leaders, Andy Churches and Roger Cross, said the money had come as a very welcome boost.

“The funding is being put straight to good use by helping us buy new boxing equipment and help modernise our facilities,” Roger told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

During the evening, awards and trophies were also presented to the club’s best performing boxers. Best Female award went to Lizzy Hughes, Best Prospect went to Ian Gardner, Best Club member award went to Mason Shaw, Best Youth Boxer award went to Danny Keen and the Perseverance award went to Jordan Callow. Other winners included Best Senior Boxer (Michael Hughes), Best Newcomer (Lizzy Hughes) and the Coverage Cup went to Mason Shaw.

Roger thanked the members for their support and added that the club would not exist if it were not for the backing of Terry Rickards of Burnham Waste, who provides space at his site near Asda for the club’s gym. Anyone who is interested in joining the club should call Roger on 01278 794087.
