Burnham-On-Sea church sealed off as icicles cause safety fears

-

Fire crews in Burnham-On-Sea sealed off a busy church in the town centre on Wednesday (December 22nd) amid concerns that icicles may come crashing down onto passing pedestrians.

Entrance routes to Burnham Catholic Church have been sealed off with fire service tape to keep the public well away.

It comes after the church contacted the fire brigade due to fears that someone could be injured by the falling sharp strands of ice.

Burnham Fire Station Officer Ian Hazleton told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Several icicles have come crashing down from the sloping roof of the church and, rather than risk anyone getting hurt, we’ve decided to close the car park and keep the public away.”

He added that the car park entrances on the Marine Drive side and Highbridge Road side of the church will remain closed until the danger has passed.

Bernadette Newton, a spokeswoman for the church, said the 9.30am service due to be held this morning had been moved to the former convent in Jaycroft Road instead.

“The conditions at the church led us to decide that the service should be moved,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “It’s the first time we’ve had a problem like this before.”
