Burnham-On-Sea Mayor hands £1,000 donation to community centre

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor has handed over a cheque for £1,000 to the town’s community centre this week.

Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report last month that the community centre in Berrow Road had been awarded a huge £135,000 grant from environmental company Viridor’s Landfill Communities Fund towards the cost of the building’s much-needed modernisation.

But in order for the grant to be handed over, the centre needed to raise £3,813 so that it could fulfill its obligation of raising a 10% contribution towards the overall grant – a goal is has now reached thanks to the Town Council.

The council dipped into its contingency fund to give £1,000 to Burnham Community Association, which runs the centre.

“The money has come in from across the community, which shows how much the centre is really valued by the town,” said the association’s Tony Winterburn, who is pictured receiving the donation from Mayor Michael Clarke on Monday (June 7th).

The community centre is home to 60 groups that attract more than 1,500 visitors every month.
