Fire fighters from Burnham-On-Sea and across the district gathered in the town’s swimming pool for two days of water training earlier this week.

The unusual sight of a team of fully-clothed firefighters greeted swimmers at the town’s Swim and Sports Academy, as pictured here.

The exercise helps them prepare for rescues around rivers and lakes, where they are frequently expected to wade into water.

Dave Sunderland, Watch Manager at Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service’s Training Centre, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The training in the pool is vital for building up our team’s expertise in dealing with water rescues. They perform the training in full rescue clothing to make sure it’s as close to the real thing as possible.”

As part of the two-day event, held on Saturday and Sunday (March 20th and 21st), the crews also visited the River Brue estuary in Highbridge to examine the fast-flowing water.
