Burnham gymnasts scoop top medals at schools championships

Members of Burnham-On-Sea's Monarchs Acro Gymnastics Club are celebrating this weekend after winning medals at the South West Schools Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships in Sherborne.

The gymnasts represented each of their schools and successfully competed against more than 200 entrants.

An action-packed routine by brothers Connor and Sean McKenna (pictured) gained a gold medal in the men's pairs while Connor McKenna and Alice Dymond gained well-deserved bronze medals in the mixed pairs competition.

Impressive routines gained joint bronze medal positions in the under 11's female pairs for Natalie Hughes and Sian Coogan, and Jazmine Bassett and Nicole Coogan.

Silver medals were also awarded to the over 13's group who performed perfectly synchronized routines. They inclyded Abby McArdle, Georgia Green, Nicole McArdle, Lily Lawson, Sophie McArdle and Lauren Jarrett.

And well-deserved bronze medals were won in the under 13's group by Connor McKenna, Alice Dymond, Emily Woolley, Poppy Broom, Tallulah Harris and Chloe Hayes.

The tumbling was very competitive this year and although no medals were gained, an excellent effort was made by all gymnasts who participated.

The Monarchs' youngest competitors, Emily-Kay Smith and Bailey Morgan, who are just six years-old, made the club very proud by completing their first schools competition.

"This was the first competition of the year with fantastic results again for the committed gymnasts who train for up to 17 hours a week," Tony Merrett, Head Coach, told

He added that later this month, the club will be competing at the South West Prelims and this will be followed by a trip to Portugal for an international competition for the higher-level gymnasts who will be competing against entrants from other coutries.
